Third AFBF Survey Reveals Stark Reality of Western Drought

Persistent drought continues to hammer farmers and ranchers in Western, Central and Southern Plains states, with far-reaching implications for not only farmers’ and ranchers’ bottom lines, but also food availability and affordability. The third edition of AFBF’s Assessing Western Drought Conditions survey illustrates many ground-level drought impacts, including expected reduction in yields, removing or destroying orchard trees or multi-year crops, and selling off portions of herds and flocks.

New Promotional Opportunity for Agritourism Venues

The American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture is looking for orchards, pumpkin patches, corn mazes and more to showcase on a new app dedicated to connecting consumers with agritourism venues. The American Farm Trail app, created by the Foundation and sponsored by Corteva, allows farmers, ranchers and farm attraction managers to sign up for free to showcase their agritourism venues. Farms and attractions can create a profile promoting their business, history, available products and more.

Growing up on a small cattle and row crop operation in eastern Kansas, the turning of the calendar page to August meant many things: back-to-school shopping, the county fair, cooler morning air while doing chores and trying to get the last of the alfalfa hay baled. But for members of Congress and their staff, August means one thing: recess. . . Celebrating America’s Farmers’ Market, and Farmers’ Markets Everywhere

Every Friday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., residents of Washington, D.C., can find something a little unexpected in the bustling metropolitan area of the National Mall: a farmers’ market. The market, which is organized and hosted by USDA, has been hosting farmers, ranchers, growers and producers from around the D.C. area since 1995. For the 2019 market season, which runs until Oct. 25, more than 30 vendors assemble on the sidewalk around the USDA headquarters to sell local honey, fresh seafood. . .
